Why local methods still beat cards in LATAM checkout
Card forms travel poorly. In Brazil, a meaningful share of digital commerce now starts and ends on PIX. In Mexico, SPEI and OXXO still close orders that a foreign card would drop. In Colombia, PSE remains the bank checkout customers recognize.
When we help a merchant turn on local methods, the first change is usually not “more volume”. It is fewer empty checkouts. Shoppers complete a flow they already use to pay rent, prepaid airtime, or a driver.
The operational cost is real: new reconciliation, new refund paths, new support macros. That is the work a gateway is supposed to absorb. One integration should produce local QR, wallet deep links, and bank tickets without a new vendor in every country.
If you are measuring only authorization rate on cards, you are measuring the wrong funnel. Measure completed orders by method, by country, and by first-time versus returning payer.
