From Southeast Asia to Africa: what transferred, what did not
TopPay’s first years were Indonesian, then Southeast Asian: QRIS, bank transfer, virtual accounts, PromptPay, GCash, Maya. Those rails taught us how to issue a QR, expire it, and match a callback that arrives out of order.
South Asia was a different shape. bKash, Nagad, Easypaisa, and JazzCash are wallet networks with their own agent history. India is UPI — a national account rail with bank apps on top. You cannot paste a QRIS checkout onto either and call it localization.
Nigeria looks closer to Indonesia than it first appears: a young wallet layer (OPay, PalmPay) sitting on top of a bank system that still clears a large share of value. Bank VA is how many merchants want to get paid. Wallets are how many consumers want to pay.
The lesson we keep: expand with the method the country already standardized, then add the wallets that sit beside it. Do not arrive with a brand and hope the rail follows.
